There have been three posts on the blog for the month of January. In the first one, I present the Grim Peak Fortress, which is the emerging part of the West Marches MegaDungeon that I'm preparing for the Dungeon23 challenge. This article will also serve as a summary to find the links to the different levels of the project, which will progress at the rate of one per month throughout the year 2023.
The second article is dedicated to the disputes between players and publishers of D&D content, since Wizards of the Coast tried to revoke the license (OGL 1.0a) that allows to make derivatives of its system. It took an unprecedented mobilization for the publisher to back down, but who knows what they're planning for the next iteration, OneDnD in 2024? In any case, the community has started to consider other games, which can be a good thing. As a small creator, I'm not much affected, but I was quite shocked by the impact of Wizards' decision on the RPG community.
Finally, I posted a small One Page Dungeon, the Tomb of the Black Knight, a generic medfan adventure to be used between two larger dungeons. Translation in english is in progress!
What's new at my gaming table?
We've played four games of my D&D Adventures in Phandalin campaign, which is approaching its fiftieth session. The group explores the Mere of the Dead Men to stop a priest of Myrkul from doing evil deeds - and gets unexpected help from the Cult of the Dragon. Of course, I'm already planning the next sessions, that is, if the adventurers survive!
I'm also working on the Cairn game system in order to prepare some one-shots with a minimalist… and deadly system!
Readings and inspirations
I've been reading issue 19 of the free D12 magazine, dedicated to the Arctic environment. Monsters, animals, weather effects, landscapes.... new spells, magic items, new class, and of course monsters as well as a little adventure. A very complete and usable article for D&D or OSR systems. The next issue changes radically and goes to the desert!
As said above, I'm interested in the Cairn system and one of its derivatives, RuneCairn, available on itch.io. I should adapt them to offer some games on my Discord server.
Finally, in fantasy literature, I'm in the middle of volume 6 of the Malazan Book Of Fallen, by Steven Erikson, a big 1000 pages tome called The Bonehunters.
Creations, tips, shop…
I mentioned above a little (one page) dungeon, the Tomb of the Black Knight, it is also available for free in my store on itch.io in french and soon will be available in english. I also published The Necromancer’s Lair on DrivethruRPG and Ko-fi.
I try to harmonize all my creations (about fifty!) and to put them back online progressively when it's not the case anymore. A summary table will list them on the blog and on my carrd page.
My battlemaps and One Page Dungeons in English can be found on DrivethruRPG and on my Ko-fi page which allows you to follow my publications, with store or subscription, as you wish. My supporters will soon get a little surprise gift with an exclusive mini-dungeon!
