And here the second (and last!) newsletter for the month of march.
Latest blog posts
Since last time, I wrote 2 blog posts (in french).
The first one is about the Rivendell Region Guide for Adventures in Middle Earth, it details the area going from the Bree surroundings to the Misty Mountains in the East. This region is a bit bare and I think the authors could have put more ressources and scenario hooks into it but there is plenty of other interesting things in this book, like legendary items, a new culture (high elfes) and lots of details about the Last Lonely House. and even block stats for the Nazgûls!
The second one is a One Page Dungeon untitled The Drowned Crypt and it is about a… drowned… crypt! It was designed for D&D but can be easily used in any fantasy ttrpg. OK this is a quick adventure with some challenges to have a change from ‘classic’ dungeon exploration. Here I put some underwater rooms so the players can be disappointed about these (I hope). It is in french but easily translatable, I might even do it myself if asked politely ;-)
My games of the month
My campaign in the Forgotten Realms (Adventures in Phandalin) is rushing towards the end, as we did play 5 times this month. I still mix the contents of the 2 starter kits of D&D and after visiting a banshie in Conyberry, the party found a lost.. cow ! Following its trail, the adventurers found a farm overrun by a group of orcs coming form the Wyvern Tor. The famer (Big Al) told them not to approach a strange well called Old Owl Well, which might be haunted and/or magical… so they decided to go and have a look! There, they found a mage from the far east Thay searching for mysterious relics from a distant past, and he was surrounded by zombies, his (rotten) bodyguards! The party went down to the well and found some rooms but could’nt find a way to open them all, so they decided to go kill some orcs! And as they couldn’t come close enough without making a lot of noise, the assault was very brutal and… fireballed!
As we are near the end of the campaign and want to go on, I’m reading a lot of stuff to prepare more adventures around Phandalin and this part of the Sword Coast.
In April, my other campaign of AiME will partially be on hold as I’ll be a player in a one or two-shots of Call of Cthulhu. It was a long time since I was a player so I’ll enjoy this change.
Readings and inspirations
I did a crowdfunding for a book including a novella and a light rpg system dedicated to initiation and received it. A nice read and an historic setting in France and UK during the religion wars in late Middle Age. The novella is the basis of the scenario so you can master it after the reading, it is well thought.
Sooner or later, I’ll master Call of Cthulhu so I begin to read the rules (again) and also some short scenarios. I’m having a look at those of the Starter Set and the Doors to Darkness book.
I’ve seen that the forthcoming book of scenarios for D&D, Journeys through the Radiant Citadel (due to june) has been announced and I don’t plan to get it as it is not the kind of universe that I like (it seems too kind for me). What about you?
The new Crucible magazine is now launching on Kickstarter. It seems to be an heir to the prestigious Dungeon mag and will be available on paper, PDF and even as a module for Foundry VTT (with scenes, monsters, lighting, articles and so, all ready to play). It is very tempting… The first issue is free and contains 4 scenarios and the assets (for print or virtual tabletop) can be downloaded, so have look there.
